Before we decided to foster to adopt we looked into doing a private adoption with a few agencies. The cost was astronomical with an actual agency so I even looked into an adoption consultant which is said to be cheaper but I don't quite agree.
I still get emails from on agency in partcular that emails out their tough to place cases.
I am a little shocked at what the birth mothers get. I understand the adoptive parents paying for MEDICAL coverage and maybe even maternity clothes. I don't quite understand paying for anything beyond that. The last case they sent me the birth mother wants nearly $400 a month for her living expenses (and the girl is 14 and lives with her parents AND has medicaid). This will be paid monthly up to six weeks after the baby is born.
The total estimated costs for an adoption through this particular agency is $25,000.
That is the business of selling a baby if you ask me.
What do you think?

May be selling but you have to understand the pain a woman goes through during child birth and the effects it has on her body for months afterwards. I don't think $400.00 a month is unreasonable. I'm sure there are some people out there who are way greedier than this family, besides if medicaid finds out about the adoption arrangements they may require this young woman to make repayment.
Permalink Reply by Melissa U. on February 15, 2012 at 10:56am I totally agree it sure seems like they are selling children. If I had the money though, I would pay it. We too are fostering to adopt through the state of Ohio. $25,000 is outrageous and wrong. My cousin got two kids from Russia and it cost her about $80,000. To me, that is insanity.
most women understand the pain you go through, but once again people are not taking responsibilty for their own actions. I think that mother should be thankful that people want to take her child and give it a good life. I DO NOT think they should profit at all in this.

If you figure $400.00 a month is only $4000.00 to the mother over the course of a 10 month pregnacy. Thats $100.00 a week for food and gas money to get to appointments. The other $21000 Is absorbed into adoption fees. With the cost of living food/gas prenatal needs the biological mother isn't profiting much. I do understand she lives at home with her parents for free and has medicaid. Medicaid only pays the medical portion of this. She may not be eligible for food stamps and welfare benefits. On the other hand she should not be entitled to any welfare or fs if she is receiving the $400 a month.
Permalink Reply by Jen Ryan on February 15, 2012 at 2:47pm I have always been shocked at how expensive it is to adopt a child. It is sad because there are so many people who could offer a loving and caring home but can't afford the fees to handle the adoption. I do think that some of the times they are selling these children because they know there are people out there who will pay the prices. Very sad...
While I do understand the birth mother is going through something emotional I don't understand accepting money for it. I just don't think you can put a price on a baby....a life. The mother would have to pay for her own groceries, rent, cable, phone, power etc whether she was pregnant or not. I wonder why anyone else would be expected to pick up that tab because they are adopting the baby. I can see how some may want to if they were financially able but I can't understand it being EXPECTED. Adoption is expensive and I think I would want the adoptive family to save their money to spend on the baby I was giving up rather than paying my bills that I would have to pay whether or not I was pregnant.
