I'm having trouble figuring out when my son can start vpk. He is already 4 but his bday is Nov. 1st. And from what ive read, he needs to be 4 by sept. of that year. I have tried to call but most of the extensions are not working or it goes to a message. Anyone else have a child that did vpk around my sons bday?

Permalink Reply by C*Bean on February 20, 2012 at 4:44pm My daughter turned 4 in Dec. and she will do vpk starting in fall. There is also an option to do it the summer before they start kindy. The summer will be less total hours though.
I'd call the preschools you are interested in and get him enrolled for the fall as soon as possible. Many are already starting to fill up. You shouldn't need any paperwork at this point. In May, you can go to the early learning coalition and get the vpk paperwork to give to the school.
I just went through this last year with my son who is in vpk this year. If you have any more questions, please ask! HTH
Permalink Reply by happymom on February 20, 2012 at 5:36pm Yes, your son has to start school in August for the next school year! My daughter has her bday on October 10th. If you have a particular school you want to to go to though you need to get on the waiting list now because the most popular ones are going to be full if you wait another month. The registration for St. Pauls was a couple of weeks ago! My daughter goes to Grace Episcopal and we LOVE it! The main teacher is a Golden Apple award winner and the location is nice. The vpk inspector said she thinks GE is one of the top three in marion county! I think they may fill up fast for this next school year.
If he is already 4 he can start vpk next school year. My grandson turns 4 this friday and he will be in vpk next school year. This information came from his daycare.
ok thank you ladies!

Permalink Reply by happymom on February 21, 2012 at 8:14am Can you please explain to me what that means? Have they changed how it works? You can't just go to the education office and then go to the preschool you want to go to? There's a set number now?

Permalink Reply by Alyssa's Mommy on February 21, 2012 at 11:17am I dont know if you work or not, but my daughter is 3 and she has attended Head Start since she was 6 months of age and some daycares are offering for the children to attend Head Start from 8am - 2pm then just move to another classroom inside the daycare for VPK from 2pm - 5pm. They're starting this for the school year of 2012-2013. So instead of having to pay for before and after school care cost since most VPK at daycare is from 9am - 12pm or school is from 8am - 2pm this is a good option.
Britni,
From what I see your son will be eligible to attend VPK during the Fall 12-13 school year. He was not age eligible to attend this fall because he was not 4 by September 1st.
There are two programs for VPK, the Fall program which is 540 hours and usually runs about 3 hours per day based on what the private VPK provider chooses to offer, and a Summer program which is 300 hours and runs around 10 hours per day, no naps.
With VPK your child can only attend one VPK program, meaning that the child cannot attend both a Fall program and a Summer program.
The Early Learning Coalition will start Fall registration around April. To register and receive your VPK Certificate of Eligibility you will need to complete an application and provide current proof of residency (utility bill or photo ID with physical address) and proof of your son's age (immunization record or birth certificate).
Please feel free to contact me personally at 352-369-2315, extension 18 with any questions that you may have.
