This stirring essay written by the mother of a 13 year old boy who is suffering from a mental disorder is a very eye opening and sad story. She shares with us how she deals with her son and what her options are.

"I am sharing this story because I am Adam Lanza's mother. I am Dylan Klebold's and Eric Harris's mother. I am Jason Holmes's mother. I am Jared Loughner's mother. I am Seung-Hui Cho's mother. And these boys—and their mothers—need help. In the wake of another horrific national tragedy, it's easy to talk about guns. But it's time to talk about mental illness."

I can't imagine being terrified of your own child but unfortunately so many families deal with this on a daily basis. What are your thoughts?

i read this yesterday. I'm sorry, but after he threatened to kill me, his butt would be locked up in a mental hospital. How many kids just go off and go into their parents bedroom at night and kill them while their sleeping???!!! How could you sleep after that? I'd have to sleep with one eye open. I'm not going to be scared in my own home. Apparently medication didn't help and isn't working for her, she said she's tried everything.  Eventually i'd give up and put him away. Mother or no mother, hopefully she's done that now that she's seen what can happen. It makes you wonder though, they really should do studies on the brain like his. Apparently he's a genius, but when he has a mood swing.. look out.

Lock the kid up or anyone else like that for that matter I do care if they are 8 or 80. If they have violent tendencies then they have no business being out in society. There was a case just a few months ago in Palm Beach County where the neighbors had to call the cops because said kid well18 or 19 yo was going after his mom with a tire iron when cops got there he went after the cop. Needless to say mental person is no longer with us. Mother said the same they had tried everything. Now of course its all the officers fault. BTW cops were called to this house regularlt because of this person hurting or trying to hurt others. Why the hell are these people allowed on the streets........because some said oh, but they have a disability or illness. Well when you "illness" starts affecting the rest of the world you need to be commited somewhere.

then people need to stop bitching about how much of their hard earned tax money goes for medicaid , and other welfare programs!  who do you think pays to keep the mental ill locked up? never mind all of the abuse they suffer while locked up!  it is easy to say OH lets just lock them up when you have never been inside of one of those places! You have never seen or heard the screams or smelled the urine! but sureeeeeeeee let's take young kids and throw them in those places makes perfect sense to me! lets just keep them there for their entire lives in HELL so that we are all safe BUT don't you dare use my tax money to do it!!!! yeah makes perfect sense to me!

I think it's important to put yourself in someone else's situation though. Yes, I do agree that something needs to be done. What I got from what she wrote was that she could not get her child placed into a mental hospital on a permanent basis. She had called the police more than once. She had brought him to the hospital and they just waited for him to calm down, because the mental ward was full, and sent him back home. The social worker said the only way anyone is actually going to do anything is if he atually commits a crime. Something needs to be done about that. Imagine how much you love your children. If they had a mental illness would you love them any less? I know I wouldn't! And as a mother you ALWAYS want what is best for your child. I think there should be more homes for people who have a mental illness where they can be treated right and not wait until they they DO hurt someone else and just thrown into a prison with actual murderers, drug dealers and rapists, but where they can be watche, so they can be happy and well cared for but also so everyone else can be safe. Hopefully President Obama gets to read this and does something.

Wow, I am glad there are so many people here who can afford to have a family member locked up for life in a mental institution.

Most people can't and insurance only goes so far. If you actually READ the article, you will see that the mom DOESN'T have that option. She even gets charged for an ambulance ride.

Do you realize that most mentally ill patients can leave their facility willingly? Yep, it's true.  Most also know how to act like they are perfectly sane, just long enough to get out.

We all see the mentally ill walk the streets. So sad, but, they have the right not to be in a facility, That is also sad.

Something really does need to be done. Our country is it's own worse enemy. We believe in socialized education, socialized law enforcement and socialize Libraries and various other government venues, but NOT socialized medicine, It doesn't make sense.

They're more than welcome to use my tax dollars to keep them off the streets :)
