I'm sure many of you have already read about Putin putting a stop to Americans adopting children from Russia. One of the reasons is they are siting cases where Russian children were hurt in America after being adopted. One case in particular was four years ago when a child died after being left in a car. I wouldn't think this is the norm for those adopting children but I don't know them all.

What do you think of this new move? Do you think it's a good idea or something very detrimental to these children? Some of these families have already met the children and are working on adopting them. Thoughts?

I think people need to adopt one of the thousands of kids that are up for adoption in this country first before going to other countries. I think a lot adopt from out of the country because it is supposedly cheaper. Not sure about that since i have never adopted but we hve plenty of kids here that need homes. Then you have the ones that insist on adopting from out of the country then ask for donations to help pay for it. There was someone on here a while back that was doing it. I believe that is wrong if you can't afford the overseas adoption then adopt here. Oh, and let's not forget the lady the stuck the kid on a plane to Russia with a note saying she couldn't take care of the kid anymore he was uncontrollable or something to that effect.

I do wonder about that myself. There are so many children here that need good homes. IF anyone has experience in this area please share with us on why it is easier to adopt out of the country. I would honestly love to know why. I have never dealt with it myself either but have heard horror stories about trying to adopt here...

I agree with Jen, with so many children in the United States that are in the system waiting to be adopted, why do couples go out to other countries. I am going to assume that it is because people have to jump through so many hoops to get a child, they finally give up and go outside the country.

Wanna know why they adopt from outside the US? it can cost more than 40k to adopt a US baby. Most agencies wont adopt to same sex couples.. couples of under a certain income, or to single parents. You can get a 3rd world baby for less than 25k, and people love Russian babies because of the back story of the culture and the girls are generally very attractive as they age. Same with Asians. It sounds horrid.. but it is true. You can "save" these poor babies in other countries because it's cheaper. Also when you adopt out of the country the birth parents have no more rights to fight you, where as here, the biological family CAN fight you. They may not always win, but it is something you could go through.

while that all sounds true except the fact that Russia and Asian countries are NOT 3rd world countries.

I lumped them too close. I wasn't claiming those as 3rd world. My bad on a bad post set up. I meant was there IS the 3rd world reason, and THEN people love Russian and Asian babies because of looks and culture story. I have an adopted cousin from China. I don't know much about his back story. (he's a distant cousin) But I do remember when my Aunt was adopting him. She was looking at culture backgrounds as a requirement for adoption. Plus the agency she went through 1st pushed outside adoption so she found an international adoption agency. This was in the 90's.

I need to start proof reading when I post when I am tired. Sorry again.

Its ok I do the same thing :)   I think another reason behind it is the status people feel it gives them. You know the "oh, look what a great person I am, I adopted this poor kid from blah, blah and gave them such a better life" status really isnt' the word I'm looking for but I can't think of it right now.

I agree with US adoptions first but they shouldnt make it so costly for parents to adopt.  So many children would have good homes if it wasnt all about money!
