Your Turkey Sandwich isn't Healthy Enough... Says the State

In North Carolina a state inspector threw out a pre-k student's lunch from home because they didn't think it met guidelines. The student had a homemade turkey and cheese sandwich, chips, apple juice and a banana. They gave the student 3 chicken nuggets instead.. WHAT?

I think that the homemade lunch was much more nutritious than three chicken nuggets. There are some employees who are not sure why the lunch was considered not to meet guidelines.

Do you send your child a lunch or do you allow them to eat the schools lunch? I know when I was in school it might have supposed to have been healthy but it wasn't really. What are your thoughts?

i seen this on the news this morning. If i was that mother i'd be LIVID!!!!!!!!!!!! i guarantee you the "state" buys PROCESSED nuggets by bulk, and they are in no way ..healthy. I'll take my sandwhich anyday over greasy nasty nuggets, thanks. I will be packing my sons lunch when he starts school. I took my lunch the whole time i was school age. So that person threw all that food out, and in return gave this kid three nuggets. A huge lunch gone and 3 lonely nuggets in it's place. Someone isn't the brightest crayon...

Yeah...and they sent her a bill for the nuggets.

I always pack my Daughter's lunch.

Keep voting for politicians that think more government involvement can solve the world's problems and this is where we end up.  History repeas itself over and over again...

Next they'll be arresting repeat offenders for child neglect and then they'll be making routine stops to your home to make sure the food triangle is being used effectively in our own kitchens.

I actually read a longer more in depth ariticle about  this that said that her luinch was not thrown out, it was supplemented with a school lunch tray, and that the child chose to only eat three nuggets to supplement her lunch from home.  That doesn't sound very bad.  My kids sometimes pack their lunches and they have had their lunches augmented because they didn't quite have enough food groups.

it was supplemented because the teacher, instead of getting the child a milk like she could have, told the child to get up, and go through the lunch line to get the school lunch. The school board admitted the teacher was in the wrong. That was in the news this morning. I don't think the child had much choice in the matter. They were told to get up and go get a school lunch, not much choice in that when they were only 4.  I appreciate that they are looking out for the kids on having a healthy lunch. But, if i send my kid to school with all the groups except dairy.. (which im sure there was some cheese on that sandwhich) then all you have to do is grab them a milk. Don't take my kids whole lunch away and waste the money i paid to buy the food. This teacher over reached her power. And now has a backlash against her for acting that way. A tiny mistake could have been avoided. I loath chicken nuggets. I would be more then upset if i found out they were pushed on my kid instead of a healthy lunch, which they DID have all along. JMO.

I think they should have just added a milk as well. What she had was a fine, healthy lunch. I don't think they should have made her supplement it with a whole lunch tray. By then she was probably afraid and wasn't sure what to do. (I would think). Definitely just add milk or something. I too think it said she had cheese on her sandwich... This was very silly and could have been avoided all together.

No one has the right to say what my child should be eating, especially when it is brought from home!  If I choose not to pick something from every food group for my child's lunchbox that is my decision.  Government is getting way to big for it's britches ( as my mom would say).  But, that's what happens when we allow government schools to start running our lives.  They, then, believe they can tell us what to do!!

I would have his job if he touched my childs lunch, how dare them.

This is ridiculous.  Sometimes I wonder how so many people can be involved in something like this YET NO ONE said "Wait a minute, you are subbing nuggets FOR A TURKEY SANDWHICH?"  I just don't understand and it seems like common sense is becoming more and more uncommon lately.
